Cliff & Cave Rescues - Sunday 16th September 2007

SES Volunteers were called out at approximately 5.30pm to rescue four people from the rocks at Hallett Cove. The family group had been walking their dog along the beach when they became stranded by the fast-rising tide.

The rescue had to be a two-part event as the woman, Julie, had walked further along in an effort to seek immediate assistance for her family.

SES Vertical Rescue Teams from Noarlunga and Sturt Units abseiled 70 metres over the rocks near Grey Avenue to reach the man and two boys. Initially the boys were rescued then the man.

Meanwhile the SAPOL Star Force officers had located Julie a further 200 metres south along the coast. They were assisted by the SES Volunteers and together they winched her up the cliff to safety.

Ambulance officers were on hand to check the family's health and they were able to go home safely.

Severe Weather Incident
Tuesday 4th July and Wednesday 5th July, 2007

Adelaide metropolitan area was affected by a severe weather system. For some time the wind gusts were around 90 km/h and mean wind speeds were around 50 – 60 km/h.

Rainfall was minimal and as such the only cause of flooding / water inundation has been tidal in origin.

Storm tides were experienced in Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf. High tides about 1 metre above normal high tide levels were experienced. The combined effect of a low-pressure system and strong winds caused these levels to be further increased. The initial high tide time for Outer Harbour on 4th July was 1840 hours, however tide levels continued to rise until approximately 2000 hours.

At 0411 hours on 5th July, the Bureau Of Meteorology cancelled the severe weather warning as the threat of severe weather had passed but they continued to monitor the situation.

Tidal surges impacted the areas at Noarlunga, Glenelg, Birkenhead, St Kilda, Middle Beach, Thompsons Beach, Pt Pirie and Pt Augusta resulting in reported damage to at least 6 houses. Significant damage has occurred to Henley, Semaphore, Noarlunga and Grange jetties. Many coastal roads were closed to traffic during the peak tide time but reopened as the tide levels abated.

SES had received over 300 requests for assistance. Requests were received from most areas of the Metropolitan area and close Regional areas. The majority of requests have been storm / wind related to property and trees.

SES and CFS crews in conjunction with Local Government undertook significant sandbagging of areas at threat from water inundation. Further support was provided by MFS crews who conducted water-pumping operations.
